Karachi – A joyous occasion turned into a tragedy as a 12-year-old girl, Azila, lost her life due to aerial firing during a wedding ceremony on Abul Hassan Isfahani Road. Azila, who was standing on the fourth floor of a nearby building, was struck by a stray bullet in the chest, leading to her untimely death.
Police reported the arrest of two suspects involved in the incident and recovered firearms from their possession. Despite efforts to curb such reckless practices, the death toll from aerial firing at weddings this month has risen to four, with three children being victims of this preventable hazard.
A Deadly Pattern
The latest incident follows a series of similar tragedies. On January 24, a 6-year-old boy, Kanju, was killed during a wedding in Surjani Sector 5C-3. A passerby and another child were also injured in the same incident. Tragically, another young boy, Elan Jinnah, succumbed to his injuries later in the hospital. Police had detained three suspects in connection with the shooting, but they were released.
On January 14, a woman named Hameed was killed during a wedding in Landhi No. 6, further highlighting the deadly consequences of aerial firing.
A Grim Start to 2025
This year has seen an alarming rise in gun violence across Karachi. In just 26 days, 22 people have been killed in shootings in different parts of the city, according to police reports.
Authorities have pledged to take stricter measures against aerial firing to prevent such incidents. However, the recurring nature of these tragedies calls for immediate and comprehensive action to protect innocent lives.
Community Call to Action
Aerial firing, often intended as a display of celebration, continues to cause irreparable loss. Community members and law enforcement must work together to raise awareness and enforce regulations to end this dangerous practice.
While families gather to celebrate joyous occasions, the senseless act of firing guns into the air casts a dark shadow, leaving lifelong grief for many. It’s time to prioritize safety over tradition and ensure no more lives are lost to preventable violence.
