  • Despite a nail-biting final victory for Islamabad United, PSL season 9 witnessed a significant dip in public interest

Islamabad United emerged victorious in a dramatic final against Multan Sultans, clinching the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 9 title in Karachi. However, the win was overshadowed by low public interest throughout the season, particularly in Karachi where the final was played.

Islamabad Steals Victory on Last Ball

Multan Sultans, after electing to bat first, set a target of 160 runs with Usman Khan (57 runs) and Mohammad Rizwan (26 runs) leading the charge. Islamabad’s chase started shaky, losing early wickets. However, a crucial 47-run partnership between Martin Guptill (50 runs) and Azam Khan (30 runs) revived their hopes.

The match went down to the wire with wickets tumbling at regular intervals for Islamabad. But a valiant effort by Imad Wasim (19 runs not out) and Naseem Shah steered them to victory on the last ball, securing a thrilling 2-wicket win. Wasim was declared the Player of the Final for his composed batting under pressure.

Islamabad Reclaims Title After Six Years

This victory marks Islamabad United’s third PSL title (2016, 2018, 2024), etching their name back onto the trophy after a six-year absence.

Low Fan Engagement Casts Shadow on Tournament

Despite the nail-biting final, the PSL season 9 struggled to garner public interest, especially in Karachi. Empty seats at the National Stadium highlighted a disconnect between fans and the tournament.
