Karachi – The Skill Development Committee of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) organized a one-day training workshop on budget reporting on Tuesday, June 24th, 2024. This workshop aimed to equip journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively analyze and report on the complexities of national budgets.

Renowned Economist and Media Expert Lead Sessions

Dr. Kaiser Bengali, a prominent economist, served as the keynote speaker for the workshop. Salman Siddiqui, Head of the Business Desk at Express Tribune, also provided valuable insights and practical training to participants.

Importance of Annual Budget Workshops Highlighted

Karachi Press Club President Saeed Sarbazi and Secretary Shoaib Ahmed both addressed the importance of budget reporting due to its intricate nature. They emphasized the KPC’s annual budget workshops as a vital tool for enhancing journalists’ skills and ensuring well-informed budget reporting.

Equipping Journalists for Informed Budget Reporting

Rehan Hyder, Head of the Skill Development Committee, inaugurated the workshop by highlighting its objectives and expressing gratitude to the esteemed guests. He emphasized the KPC’s commitment to providing training opportunities for journalists through workshops, seminars, and lectures.

Focus on Unfair Tax System and Budget Transparency

Dr. Bengali shed light on the current state of Pakistan’s tax system, pointing out its unfairness towards low-income earners and renters. He emphasized the need for the government to invest in education, healthcare, and justice systems rather than relying solely on taxes. He also highlighted the challenges associated with the economic crisis, including the exodus of teachers from public institutions and the lack of new income sources despite an increase in government revenue due to currency fluctuations.

Continuous Learning Encouraged by KPC

Karachi Press Club Secretary Shoaib Ahmed further urged participants to continuously update their knowledge and skills, highlighting the KPC’s tradition of organizing training events for their benefit. He expressed his special thanks to the participants, speaker guests, and trainers. Mr. Ahmed concluded by reiterating the KPC’s commitment to arranging similar workshops on various topics in the future.
