Young Doctors at JPMC Protest Against Violence and Unjust Transfer

Healthcare Workers at JPMC Demand Safety, Justice, and Reinstatement of Dr. Yaseen

Doctors, nurses, and paramedics at JPMC Karachi staged a protest by shutting down OPDs and elective surgeries. The protest was sparked by the unjust transfer of Dr. Yaseen and rising incidents of violence against healthcare workers. YDA issued key demands and vowed to continue until written assurances are received.

KARACHI: Doctors, nurses, paramedics, and physiotherapists at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) staged a powerful protest today, demanding justice and safety for healthcare workers following a recent surge in violence at the hospital.

The protest was led by the Young Doctors’ Association (YDA) JPMC in response to the unfair transfer of Dr. Yaseen, who had courageously supported fellow doctors after a violent incident in the ICU. The hospital’s Outpatient Departments (OPDs) and Elective Operation Theatres (OTs) were completely shut down as a sign of unity and resistance.

Key Demands of YDA JPMC

YDA JPMC has put forward seven clear demands to the authorities:

  1. Immediate cancellation of the false FIR registered against the doctor and return of the stolen belongings.
  2. Arrest and termination of all culprits involved in the ICU assault.
  3. Reinstatement of Dr. Yaseen and reversal of his transfer order.
  4. An official directive from IG Sindh ensuring that no FIR is registered against doctors without prior investigation by the Sindh Healthcare Commission.
  5. Strict implementation of the Healthcare Security Bill and the One Patient, One Attendant policy to reduce overcrowding and risk of violence.
  6. Expansion of ICU facilities, including more beds, additional staff, and centralized consultations.
  7. Immediate removal of the retired Colonel serving as Security Incharge and PAFF employees allegedly involved in the assault.

Protest to Continue Until Demands Are Met

While the Health Secretary has verbally assured the protesters that their concerns will be addressed, the YDA has clearly stated that the protest will continue until official written orders are issued and all demands are fulfilled.

“We are here not just for Dr. Yaseen, but for the safety, dignity, and respect of every healthcare worker in this hospital,” said a YDA spokesperson. “Doctors’ safety is non-negotiable.”

Healthcare Services Affected

With OPDs and elective surgeries shut, patient care at JPMC has been severely impacted. Protesters, however, maintain that such action was necessary to highlight the increasing risks faced by doctors and the lack of protection in public hospitals.

Doctors Demand Respect and Protection

This protest has sparked public debate around the urgent need for hospital security reforms, the rights of medical professionals, and the rising incidents of violence in hospitals.

Healthcare professionals across Karachi and other cities are expected to join in solidarity if demands are not met promptly.
