- AKU Expands Learning Beyond Classrooms with Model-WHO Simulation
KARACHI: The Aga Khan University (AKU) recently hosted its first-ever Model-World Health Organization (M-WHO) summit, bringing together students from diverse disciplines to discuss and debate global health challenges. The two-day event, led by AKU’s Graduate Education Student Society (AGESS) and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), aimed to provide students with practical exposure to international health governance.
The summit focused on critical issues such as Universal Health Coverage, Pandemic Resilience, Climate and Health, and Gender Health Equity. Participants engaged in discussions, worked in committees to draft resolutions, and explored how policies can shape better health outcomes worldwide. The event also encouraged informal lobbying, negotiation, and teamwork, simulating real-world policymaking processes.
Dr. Luo Dapeng, WHO’s Country Representative for Pakistan and the event’s Chief Guest, highlighted the importance of global cooperation in tackling health issues. “People’s health is interconnected across borders. The Model-WHO event allows young minds to contribute innovative solutions,” he said.
Dean of AKU’s Medical College, Dr. Adil Haider, emphasized the significance of the summit in preparing future leaders. “By engaging in debates, negotiations, and policy creation, students gain valuable skills in diplomacy, conflict resolution, and teamwork, which are crucial for bringing meaningful change,” he stated.
Professor Shahid Shamim, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, praised the initiative as an innovative learning experience. “This platform enables students from various backgrounds to collaborate in a safe and supportive environment,” he said, adding that future event editions will include participants from other institutions.
At the conclusion of the summit, awards were distributed for best delegates and position papers, recognizing outstanding performances. Organizers expressed optimism about expanding the event, reinforcing AKU’s commitment to fostering leadership and innovation in global health.
