Karachi – The Aga Khan University (AKU) held its convocation ceremony on Wednesday, celebrating the achievements of 473 graduates in the presence of Princess Zahra Aga Khan. The event also marked a historic transition as AKU honored its late Founder and first Chancellor, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, and welcomed His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan V as its new Chancellor. Princess Zahra was appointed Pro-Chancellor, reflecting her deep involvement in AKU’s vision and progress.

The graduates, comprising over 70 percent of women, received bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in 16 diverse fields, including nursing, medicine, and education. This year’s convocation added to AKU’s impressive legacy, bringing the total number of degrees, diplomas, and postgraduate certificates awarded in Pakistan to nearly 16,000.

Honoring a Legacy of Opportunity

Addressing the ceremony, AKU President Sulaiman Shahabuddin reflected on the vision of the university’s late Chancellor. “Our founding Chancellor once said that the cornerstone of his vision was opportunity – the opportunity to build a better life for oneself and one’s family,” he said. “Looking at the Class of 2024, I see women and men who are ready to create a world filled with opportunity.”

Princess Zahra’s appointment as Pro-Chancellor was announced by Zakir Mahmood, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Her appointment demonstrates His Highness Prince Rahim Aga Khan’s strong commitment to building on the legacy of our founding Chancellor,” he stated.

Princess Zahra, in her remarks, expressed gratitude for her new role. “I am deeply honored that His Highness has appointed me Pro-Chancellor of AKU. Together, we will sustain and strengthen this remarkable institution while staying true to our father’s vision,” she said.

Inspiring Words from Graduates and Faculty

Valedictorian Mustafa Saiyoum highlighted the importance of AKU’s mission in today’s world. “His Highness the Aga Khan’s vision of pluralism reminds us of the diverse community we have built here and the inclusive world we aim to shape,” he said. “As AKU graduates, we must bridge gaps, create solutions, and be agents of positive change.”

The convocation also recognized exceptional individuals for their contributions. Saira Parveen received the School of Nursing and Midwifery’s Outstanding Graduate Award, while Shahnoor Ahmed was named the Medical College’s Best Graduate. Faculty members were also honored, with Associate Professor Shabina Ariff and Professor Sarah Saleem receiving the Award of Excellence in Research, Dean Adil Haider receiving the Award of Distinction, and Professor Muhammad Rizwan Khan receiving the Award of Excellence in Teaching.

The convocation was a testament to AKU’s commitment to academic excellence and its ongoing mission to shape leaders who will make a difference in their communities and beyond.
