A horrific attack on a Shia mosque in Muscat, Oman, has left at least 5 people dead and several injured. The gunmen used automatic weapons and fired from a nearby building into the Imam Bargah of Wadi Al Kabir. The mosque, known as Imambargah Ali ibn Abi-Talib, is located in Wadi al-Kabir.

This attack marks a dark day for Oman, a nation known for its peace and tolerance. During the Islamic month of Muharram, Oman observes religious processions and commemorations with greater freedom compared to other Arab countries. Many expatriates from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other nations participate in these Muharram traditions alongside Omanis.

In a statement, the Royal Oman Police confirmed their response to the shooting incident that occurred near a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir area. The statement did not disclose details on the attackers or the motive behind the assault. However, it assured the public that a full investigation is underway to apprehend those responsible and bring them to justice. This attack marks a significant breach of Oman’s usual peace and security, and authorities are likely prioritizing maintaining public order while investigations.

Following the attack, the Pakistani Embassy in Oman expressed their condolences to the victims’ families. In a gesture of solidarity, Pakistan’s ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, Imran Ali, visited some of the wounded in the hospital, as reported by the embassy on social media. In a separate video message posted on the same platform, Ambassador Ali urged Pakistanis in Oman to cooperate with local authorities and avoid the area where the shooting occurred.
