Pakistan and Azerbaijan are on the cusp of a flourishing trade and economic relationship, fueled by the recent launch of direct flights between the two nations. Atif Ikram Sheikh, head of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), enthusiastically endorsed this development, highlighting the potential for a new era of cooperation.
H. E. Mr. Khazar Farhadov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, visited FPCCI Head Office in Karachi to explore business-to-business and people-to-people potential.
Enhanced Trade Opportunities:
- Geographic Advantage: Mr. Sheikh emphasized the strategic location of Azerbaijan, presenting a lucrative market for Pakistani exports due to their shared land border and established land-based trade routes.
- B2B and People-to-People Links: Direct flights are expected to significantly boost business-to-business (B2B) interactions and people-to-people exchanges, fostering stronger economic ties.
Building on Recent Momentum:
- High-Level Visit: H. E. Mr. Khazar Farhadov highlighted the impactful visit of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, to Azerbaijan in June 2023 stating that it provided a significant impetus for this strengthened partnership.
- Strategic Collaboration: Both countries are actively exploring collaboration across key sectors, including information technology (IT), transportation, defense, energy, and trade.
Improved Connectivity:
- Direct Flights: The establishment of direct flights from Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi to Azerbaijan, operating twice weekly in each direction, significantly enhances connectivity.
- Future Expansion: Both nations are committed to investigating the possibility of increasing the frequency of direct flights to further facilitate travel and business interactions.
Trade Agreement in Sight:
- Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA): H.E. Mr. Khazar Farhadov noted that discussions regarding a PTA are underway, which, upon signing, is anticipated to deliver substantial benefits to businesses in both Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
