TikTok, a widely used platform for short videos, recently unveiled a new feature that allows users to reset their ‘For You’ feed if they believe their recommendations have become outdated. This addition is just the latest example of how TikTok strives to provide its customers with a positive experience while also giving them a platform for individual expression.

The For You feed is a tool for exploring new creators, communities, and goods on TikTok. Unfortunately, there are occasions when the suggestions made by others no longer seem useful or varied enough. To combat this, TikTok is releasing a feature that will allow users to reset the suggestions in their For You feed, giving them the impression that they have recently joined the app. The system will then recommend additional content based on the user’s activities.

This feature adds to TikTok users’ ability to filter out videos that include specific hashtags or phrases from their For You feeds and skip future films from a specific producer or sound. Activating the refresh option won’t affect users’ settings or followed accounts.

TikTok uses many methods to protect its platform and deliver a fun viewing experience. TikTok removes content that breaks its rules, makes unsuitable content ineligible for recommendation into For You streams, limits suggestions of topics that could have a negative impact if seen repeatedly, and filters out content with complicated or mature themes from teen accounts.

Making sure a user isn’t presented with too much similar content is a fundamental difficulty for any recommendation system. TikTok is dedicated to solving this problem and is developing a method to randomly switch between different categories of content. TikTok strives to prevent giving users the content they have already seen by not serving videos from the same creator or using the same sound.

TikTok is aware that its users use the app to discuss a wide range of topics, including negative emotions and stressful situations. TikTok’s strategy is to delete anything that encourages or glorifies self-injury or other policies, while permitting recovery or educational information, with restrictions on how often such content is acceptable for a recommendation.

TikTok has released over 15 system changes in the past year, during which time it has also added support for more languages. This effort is jointly driven by the company’s trust and safety and product teams, and is guided by research from scholarly journals and consultation with industry professionals like those at the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital.

TikTok will continue these efforts as it strives to recommend a diversity of content to enable an enriching discovery experience. The platform is determined to provide both a welcoming space for self-expression and an enjoyable environment for its community.
