KARACHI: — A group of final-year students from the Mass Communication Department at the University of Karachi has launched a planting campaign to raise awareness about the importance of trees and environmental conservation. The initiative, led by the Green Guardians team, is headed by Syed Mahmood Haider and includes ten enthusiastic members of students from the Evening Program.

The campaign kick-off event was organized by Green Guardians and featured several prominent figures from various walks of life. Among the guests were renowned writer and director Shaukat Ali Muzaffar and the popular host of Islamic programs on QTV, Abdul Momin Memon.
Dr. Asmat Ara, chairperson of the Mass Communication Department, chaired the session. She praised the students’ efforts and emphasized the importance of sustaining their passion for environmental work beyond their academic years. “The Green Guardians’ initiative is commendable. I am hopeful that these students will continue to contribute to environmental preservation, even after graduating,” she said.
Dr. Aamir Alamgir, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies and a noted climate change researcher, highlighted the responsibility that comes with planting trees. “It’s not just about planting; it’s about nurturing them too. If you plant a tree, make sure to take care of it,” he urged.
Fayeq Saleem, an environmental researcher, discussed the benefits of growing vegetables and small fruit gardens, promoting urban farming as a way to improve both health and the environment. Additionally, activist Shahroz Saleem encouraged students to be proactive in fighting climate change through continuous planting efforts.
The event was a significant step toward fostering environmental consciousness among the university community, and the Green Guardians aim to ensure the campaign’s impact goes beyond the campus.
